A valued part of The Smith Family

Grafton VIEW Club

Grafton VIEW was formed in 1967.

Club members are involved in raising donations for the Learning for Life Program, which is targeted towards the education of disadvantaged students, whom we support. VIEW is a not-for-profit organization.

If you truly believe that supporting a child's education is the best way to break the cycle of disadvantage, then all you need to do is come along to enjoy a meal in friendship with entertainment, which is usually an interesting and motivated guest speaker.

The daytime meetings are held on the 4th Tuesday of the month, commencing at 10.30 am at the Grafton District Services Club, Mary Street, Grafton.

For more information the contact is Helen on        02 66 423 867.

One Members Journey with VIEW

Meet Jeanette Calvi from Grafton Evening VIEW Club.

Jeanette has been a VIEW member for 38 years.  She recently contacted us to share how her life with VIEW began!

‘All that time ago, I moved from Sydney to Grafton, just after returning from London, with my husband and family.  We purchased a pharmacy in Grafton, which was the reason for moving.  I thought I would be lonely after leaving all my friends and family in Sydney.

However, one-day a lovely lady introduced herself, and invited me to join the Grafton Evening VIEW Club.  I had vaguely heard of this organisation and asked what it involved and what did I have to do.

She explained what VIEW stood for, and said all you have to do is enjoy yourself with a tasty dinner, listen to a motivated guest speaker, and at the same time, help disadvantaged people.

What could I say!  One couldn’t disagree with that so I went along and here I am….an active member for 38 years.

I was welcomed into Grafton’s open arms.  What a tree change!’

2020 Christmas in Grafton

Christmas celebrations were recently held at the Grafton District Services Club with members seated at brightly decorated tables, celebrating the final meeting for 2020.

A tasty homemade Christmas cake was cut by Elaine and President Faye. The special cake was shared and savored by the members.  Several lucky door prizes were won, with the raffle prize going to Sandra.

Instead of a guest speaker this month, several members spoke about happenings within their lifetime. Norma spoke about the war years, and how her father had built an air raid shelter under the house. Sandra had everyone rolling with laughter with her stories about night duty in the nursing wards. Joyce told rewarding stories of her experience in Special Schools. Finally, Helen read a funny poem about lack of rest and sleep in hospital.

The next social outing will be held at the Crown Hotel for a lunch, overlooking the beautiful Clarence River, on Tuesday 19th January at midday, while the first meeting for 2021 will be held at the Grafton District Services Club, Mary Street on Tuesday, 23rd February, commencing at 10.30 am.

Our members genuinely believe that VIEW’s support of a child’s education is the best way to help break the poverty cycle, influencing ongoing generations. You can help by simply coming along to VIEW Club meetings to enjoy a meal with entertainment, which is usually an interesting and motivational guest speaker. At the same time, you can make new friends and renew old friendships.

We warmly invite visitors to come along and join us for the first meeting for 2021. Simply ring Vorna at 66424719, no later than the Friday before the meeting for catering purposes.  Members who are unable to attend, please remember to phone Vorna.

Celebrating 53 Years Young

Because of the COVID-19 restrictions, the October birthday lunch was held as a normal meeting with a ‘Garden Party’ theme. The restrictions did not deter members from celebrating, with an enjoyable meal & entertainment

Elizabeth Birch, VIEW National Counsellor, was warmly welcomed & spoke about happenings in the area. Elizabeth presented Helen with a thank you gift as she has retired from the International Women’s Committee, after many years of participation. Norma was presented with her 30 years membership badge.

Many tombolas & lucky door prizes were distributed to gleeful winners. The Raffle winners were Helen, Pauline, Joy and Jeanette.

VIEW was fortunate in having Claire Aman, a published writer, as the guest speaker. Claire pointed out that the VIEW 53rd Birthday was in harmony with Grafton’s named 53 islands in the Clarence Valley. She spoke about her upbringing & latest creative writing project for the Clarence Valley. Claire’s latest project “Long Way Home” will be available for purchase soon from the Book Warehouse.

Next meeting will be the Christmas luncheon on November 24th. Members are asked to please bring along Christmas decorations for the occasion. VIEW has so much to offer, so why not come along to this function to enjoy making new friends & renewing the old ones? At the same time, with your participation, a child’s education will ultimately be supported & the cycle of disadvantage broken.

When you decide to come please let Vorna know no later than the Friday before the meeting. This is for catering purposes. She can be contacted at 66424719. See you there!

Grafton VIEW Connections

It is so important that we connect with one another & support our communities through these challenging times, despite the restrictions of the pandemic, VIEW Club offers women of all ages an opportunity to reconnect with others once again. Joining VIEW is a perfect opportunity to make new friends, & take pride in the fact that you are helping young Australians in need by supporting their education.

The September meeting had a good turnout of members & guests to enjoy friendship, an interesting guest speaker & a yummy lunch supplied by the new chef. At this meeting, Grafton VIEW Club returning member, Jan, was welcomed back to Grafton.

The guest speaker for this month was Leonie Roberts from the Historical Society. Whilst historical Grafton happenings were brought to light, old newspaper articles, & most precious hand-crafted displays were handed around for inspection. One example was a felted picture, crafted with merino wool on canvas, edged with hand cut merino & alpaca leaves & butterflies.

The raffle was won by Kay, & the lucky door prize to Norma.

Now, everyone loves a party! At the moment, our Club is gearing up for the 53rd birthday celebration with a Garden Party theme. So, please set aside Tuesday, 27th October to come along, have some fun & enjoy listening to the guest speaker, Clare Aman.

The venue is at Grafton District Services Club, Mary Street, commencing at 10.30 am. Covid-19 restrictions for this celebration will be in place. You are warmly invited to come along & join in the fun. Please let Vorna know if you will be attending, no later than the Friday before by contacting 66424719. See you there!

Grafton VIEW Club Meets Again!

By using Social Distancing, the Covid-19 restrictions did not deter Grafton VIEW from enjoying a catch up with friends over a tasty meal, prepared by the new chef. Laughter is definitely the best medicine!

“What is VIEW Club?” you ask. It is a national women’s organization, exclusively supporting children’s education. By supporting a child while they are still at school, prevents the need to support them as adults. VIEW is proud to be the largest community to sponsor the Learning for Life program. This year is important for both VIEW and the students we support. It is the 60th anniversary; this occasion has landed at a tough time for these families. They are struggling to pay the bills for educational essentials for their children. So, sponsoring a child through the Smith Family helps to ease these burdens by providing a combination of financial support, personal support & access to a range of out-of-school learning & mentoring programs. VIEW helps children get the most out of their education.

Grafton VIEW Club welcomes women of all ages to join, so that more children in need can be reached. To find out about joining Grafton VIEW Club, you can phone Helen at 66423867, or more information can be found by visiting … http://view.org.au/find-a-club/nsw/clubs/grafton-view-club/
