Diamond Celebration for Pennant Hills in 2020
In 1960, the Smith Family founded VIEW Clubs as a way of supporting and giving voice to women’s needs and interests. In that year, four ladies: Jean Stuart, Olive Brett, Barbara Grimshaw and Maj Headon approached The Smith Family, wanting to start a Club at Pennant Hills. An inaugural meeting followed on 22 September at The Smith Family Headquarters. Then, on 20 October the club hosted its own first meeting, resulting in a membership of forty-six women.
The fact that the club is one of a handful of clubs celebrating its sixtieth birthday this year is testament to the enduring power of VIEW; not even a pandemic can dampen our spirits!
Our club sponsors two Learning for Life students as well as keeping up a steady supply of beanies, knitted squares made into blankets plus stationery items. Even though we have not been able to meet for luncheons or outings since March, our ladies have maintained their commitment to supporting the needs of the children. Recently, Delegate Liz delivered 45 beanies, 45 blankets, 35 face masks and eight large garbage bags of stationery supplies, lunch boxes and drink bottles to the Parramatta office.
These days, our club consists of thirty members. Luncheons are held from 11.30am on the second Tuesday of the month at Oatlands Golf Club, Dundas and we usually enjoy social outings on the fourth Tuesday of the month. President Ruth fosters a spirit of friendliness and inclusion. As a result, the warm, welcoming atmosphere of our club ensures that our members feel valued and respected.
Our sixtieth birthday celebrations may not eventuate the way we had planned, but the ladies of Pennant Hills VIEW Club will find a way to mark this special occasion in a fitting manner and we will continue to support “the Voice, Interest and Education of Women” along with the important work of the Smith Family and the Learning for Life Programme.
