Successful Beginning for 2019

The members of Ringwood VIEW Club have had an energetic start to 2019, beginning with our annual January luncheon catch-up at Yering Meadows Golf Club. This is a fabulous venue with good service, plenty of space, great food and spectacular views over the golf club and mountains. It’s a chance for everyone to get together and chat to our heart’s content, without the formalities of a meeting.

Starting the annual meeting cycle with the AGM is always a challenge as committee positions are up for nomination, but it was pleasing that we have all key positions filled with the addition of an Assistant Secretary, so welcome Rhonda to the team.

Having the necessities out of the way, the activities and events were launched. A movie outing to see “Green Book” and a couple of coffee mornings have been well attended and greatly appreciated by our members. We have had two guest speakers so far this year. Lyn Lynch from the Croydon Historical Society, took us on a nostalgia trip with her stories and photos of the creation of the township of Croydon, from a farming, timber milling and brick-making community, to the sprawling suburb it is today.

In April, Maryann Bennie taught us all how to organise and declutter, in a talk that was warm, humorous and very relevant.

A number of members ventured out to Cranbourne Gardens, taking a train tour to see the highlights. This was a fabulous experience and the tour guide was so practical and knowledgeable that we came away feeling that we had learned a lot. We also saw some stunning plants, flowers and examples of landscaping that would work well in suburban gardens as well as in a large setting like Cranbourne.

Birthday and Christmas 2018

The end of 2018 was a busy time at Ringwood VIEW. We celebrate our birthday in November, and before we knew it, the rush of Christmas was upon us, with VIEW celebrations, extra activities and, of course, family activities.

Besides our usual celebrations, a group of us participated in an outing at the invitation of Wantirna VIEW, to do a Christmas Lights bus tour. It was a lovely way to see our beautiful city looking all dressed up for the festive season, and also connect with other VIEW members.

Having drinks and nibbles on the bank of the Yarra River, and being driven around to all the best vantage points of the city to browse and take in the atmosphere, was a lovely way to wind down and relax.

A group of us also volunteered for gift wrapping at a city venue in the week before Christmas, which was a worthwhile and very funny experience. We raised over $100 and the most challenging items to wrap were a skate board and a snow dome. We did a splendid job and hope to have the opportunity to do it again at the end of 2019.

Our birthday and Christmas parties were festive and entertaining, with our usual raffles, entertainment and special touches that make each of these a lovely day to enjoy with members and friends.

Promoting VIEW

Shown on the left is a photo of a market stall that Ringwood VIEW Club ran at the end of March. We were offered a space at no cost at a local farmers market, so we took the opportunity to promote VIEW and to fundraise for our Learning for Life students.

Members pooled their bric-a-brac collections, family members helped with setting up and packing up, and 5-6 ladies assisted on the day. It turned out to be a beautiful, sunny day and we turned the work into a fun experience.

The opportunity came from one of our guest speakers, who is a Lion’s Club member, which organises the market. They regularly offer a market space to groups who might benefit from the opportunity, and to whom an extra few hundred dollars might make a difference. The club also donated the profits from their market BBQ to us, which really helped with our fundraising.

We are a small club and are hoping to increase our membership but we do find fundraising difficult at times, so this was a fabulous boost to us and a wonderful example of community groups working together to help each other in their respective causes.
