2022 April Meeting
What a delight it was to have three Learning for Life workers from The Smith Family to talk to us at our April meeting. As a thank you they were each given two of the beautiful coathangers made by Maureen.
Delores said that every child deserves a chance and, once in the Smith Family Learning for Life program they get long term support for education until they finish school (and sometimes tertiary education).
Over 700 schools in Australia are involved and teachers refer children to the program. It’s estimated that one in six children in Australia are in need – all low, or no income, about half in single-parent families, often with health problems or disabilities. They ensure that every child has a device for school as well as internet access.
Monique’s work involves working with the student, the student’s family and the school. She also arranges interpreters, if needed, to speak with parents.
Vide, as program co-ordinator offers education programs to facilitate numeracy and listening skills, help with homework and arrange for volunteers to help with reading, and set up peer reading help by matching with a high-school student. Students are also taken to different workplaces to see how work is done, and later arrange work experience.
During school holidays they will bring groups to the Story Factory in Parramatta. They are given access and training with technology, and focus on finding affordable housing.
It is hoped that Governments may introduce preschool education for the disadvantaged.
2021 October
While still in lockdown because of Covid-19, there have been no face-to-face meetings, but as vaccination levels increase, there is hope for increasing relaxion of the restrictions. In the meantime it would be nice if we could meet together on zoom on our usual function day – the third Wednesday. Covid vaccination numbers are looking good, perhaps a face-to-face meeting November or December?🤞

Wednesday 20 October 11 am– Zoom get-together with our “Covid uncut” hairstyles! We’ll take a photo to put in our next newsletter that will be useful to go into our archives! Attached are some basic instructions for setting up with a computer an iPhone or iPad,or an Adroid phone or tablet. There are about nine members without computers, so it would be nice if some members confident with Zoom could let them just listen in to the discussion by connecting with them with your phone on “speaker”.
Making a Difference Awards
Two of our treasured members have received a “Making a Difference” award in 2021. Congratulations to Pat and Maureen. Thanks go to our Delegate, Janice, for organising their nominations.
Making a Difference Awards
Pat has managed the Trading Table for over 20 years enabling the Parramatta VIEW club to sponsor Learning for Life Students and their activities.
She stores donated items at her home, prices them and brings the goods each month to set up the Trading Table. She also makes library bags and collects items for the LfL learning clubs. Pat’s commitment to this role demonstrates her to be caring and a supportive member in helping disadvantaged children.
Making a Difference Awards
Maureen has been a member of Parramatta VIEW for nearly 37 years. During this time she has gone above and beyond the VIEW member expectations and clearly demonstrates being supportive and caring. Over the years Maureen has contributed her time to support the Trading Table, and has also supplied many knitted items for sale. She has continued to support children by knitting items for the Children’s Hospital. Maureen continues to knit blankets and floor mats for the Learning for Life students.
