Christmas In July 2022

Celebrations

With our July meeting we had so much to celebrate.  The Sporting Club put on a lovely Christmas in July meal for us which we all enjoyed.  We had a trading table to raise funds for our LfL students which is always appreciated by all.  The Smith Family 100year birthday celebration was a huge success and lots of fun with everyone wearing their fancy spectacles and some beautiful work went into these.

Our very special guest speaker (pictured below) was author Verena M. McGowan. Verena’s book is entitled The girl from East Berlin. This is the true story of Verena’s  life that started in Germany in her early years before arriving in Australia with her family. Verena’s story is about hope, intrigue, regeneration, love and faith in oneself and is a wonderful story.

Outings for July include a coffee morning on the 21st  and lunch  on the 28th at Fiction, Raby Bay. More outings to look forward to in August. For information on any outings please contact committee members above.

Next month we will be celebrating our 25yr birthday at Redlands Sporting Club. This will be great fun with lots of memories and photographs from over the years.  We will also have some entertainment on the day.  It would be lovely to see you all there on this special day. Please bring along a friend if you are able as I am sure it is going to be a great day.

Travelling the World

June 2022

Members and guests enjoyed our June meeting as we were fortunate to have a very engaging and interesting speaker (as we always do).  Camille came to us from A.P.T. Travel. With 39 years in this profession and having travelled in every continent you can imagine how much knowledge Camille had to impart.  She spoke extensively about the Kimberley area and shared some beautiful photos with us. Did you know that the Bungle Bungles was first seen by a crew flying over that area in the 1980’s?  Since then of course it has been a major tourist attraction in Australia.

Camille also shared information about Vietnam and Cambodia, such beautiful countries. It was interesting to learn that A.P.T. support a children’s charity in Cambodia as well as other children’s charities. We were also very pleased to hear that as an organisation they also support The Smith Family.  We also heard about so many peoples favourite “Canada”. I can tell you that we all left that meeting ready to go home and pack our bags.

In July we will be holding our Trading Table to add to our funds for our LfL students so be on the lookout for some good bargains.

Our guest speaker will be author Verena McGowan. Verena will be speaking about her life and her book titled Verena, the girl from East Berlin.

Don’t  forget our outing to McLeay Island on 23rd June.

July outings will include lunch at Friction Raby Bay Complex on 28th at noon. Coffee morning on 21st at 10am at Arabic Cafe Cleveland.

We will be celebrating 100years of The Smith Family at our July luncheon meeting with some very glamorous and fun Spectacles to be worn by our ladies.

Meeting guest speaker, Andrew

Health for Hearing and Brain

We once again had an enjoyable lunch meeting at the Redland Sporting Club that was well attended by members and guests.

The guest speaker this month was Andrew Campbell who is an audiologist and he spoke about hearing and brain health. He was so informative and conveyed a lot of knowledge that a lot of us knew very little about. Andrew told us of the importance of having hearing loss diagnosed and treated early.   If left untreated hearing loss can lead to dementia.  If treated early there is likely to be a much better result and be less likely to lead to the onset of dementia.  The inability to hear leads to isolation, loss of confidence and loss of communication.  Andrew was a captivating and interesting speaker.

Our June  guest will be Camille More. Camille is from a travel agency and will be speaking to us about being organised when travelling, and so much more.  Just about everyone is ready to get out there again after so many restrictions.

Don’t forget about our May 26th outing to Roma Street Parklands. We will enjoy organised tours of the gardens and have a lunch at the Garden Cafeteria or if you would prefer you can bring your own picnic lunch. Further June outings include morning tea at The Farm, Wellington Point on 16th June at 10.00 am. As well as lunch at Macleay Island Bowls Club on 23rd June at 10.30am

There is the QA02Zone conference at The Newnham Hotel on 24th June  at 10.30am.  For any additional information please contact the committee members above.

Our June lunch meeting will be held on June 9th at the Redlands Sporting Club. Hope to see you all there and bring along a guest if you are able.

Easter Bonnets for April

2022 April Update

Our luncheon meeting for April was a great success. Members and guests enjoyed an interesting and fun time together.  We celebrated Easter with an Easter Bonnet competition and had a wonderful time with our guest speaker Thresa White.

Thresa came to us from Heart Fit and was a wealth of information concerning health and fitness as we age. Almost everyone got up with her to exercise and dance to some really great music..

Next months guest speaker will be Andrew Campbell from Hearing and Brain Health. This should also be an interesting topic to look forward to.

Outings this month included morning tea at The Farm, Wellington Point, on the 21st April and lunch at Elysium Cafe, Victoria Point, on the 28th April.

In May we hope to have an outing to Roma Street, Parklands, which promises to be a fun day for all.   Another planned outing will include coffee and a chat at Arabica Cafe, from 10.00am  on the 19th May.

Just remember that Zone Conference (QA02) will be held at the Newham Hotel on the 24th June.   Our next luncheon meeting will be on the 12th May.  Hope to see you all there.

St Patrick's Day

2022 March

Happy Saint Patricks day to you for the seventeenth.

Unfortunately members were unable able to hold the normal February meeting, although some members did manage to met for an informal lunch.  This meant that March became our first meeting for 2022, and of-course our all important A.G.M. which was well attended by members as well as seven guests, who were welcomed on the day.

We were fortunate to have included in our guests, our National Councillor Robin, who presented the Committee with their badges after they were sworn into office.

Robin also spoke of the early days of The Smith Family as well as where we are today with the Learning For Life students, which was very interesting.

Our Club has increased the numbers of students that we sponsor this year and it is a great pleasure to be able to contribute to this wonderful work. As you will no doubt see from some of our photos that we celebrated St. Patricks day at our luncheon meeting. This was great fun with some very funny Irish jokes thrown in.

The March outing will be lunch at The Farm at Wellington Point on Wednesday 23rd March at 11.30am, and it would be lovely to see you there, as all are welcome; so bring some friends  for good company, food and fun.....

2021 December

Christmas Celebrations

As the year of 2021 comes to an end, so do our meetings and outings for our club for the year.

We finished the year with a Christmas bang.  All of our members entered into the spirit of the day, dressing up and accessorising beautifully and participating in the Secret Santa fun, and some great quizzes to test our grey matter, it was truly a fun time .

We were fortunate enough to have wonderful entertainment for the day.  Liam Waldock, an amazing young man was kind enough to give of his precious time and extraordinary talent to perform for our members.  Liam is a beautiful young local man with a singing voice that holds you captivated from start to finish. We can’t thank him enough for sharing his time and his talent with us.

Next year we start off in January on Thursday 13th with a casual lunch at Cleveland RSL. Our first meeting in February will be our A.G.M.

On behalf of our members we would say a big thank-you to our President Jean who always puts in 110% effort for our club.

Sending our best wishes for a happy and safe Christmas season to all.

Hope to see new members as well as old in the upcoming year with some great plans already in place.

Until then stay safe and  happy.

Quilts of Valour

Eight members at the Zone Christmas and Friendship Celebration

Amazing Guest Speaker: Aosthie

2021 November

2021 is rapidly drawing to a close.   This year has gone by so quickly and has been packed with activities for our Club, with the month of November hosting some wonderful get togethers for members and guests.

With 11th November being Remembrance Day, we were fortunate enough to have our monthly luncheon meeting on the day.  Our Diggers were honoured in several ways that day, and it was such a privilege to do so.

Our very special guest speakers, and fittingly so, were Barbara and Bill Kenny from an organisation known as Quilts of Valour.  This incredible group of volunteers make and distribute beautiful hand made quilts to our past and serving forces. These quilts have been a source of comfort for many men and women and also their children. Barbara and Bill also offer a listening ear to the Veterans who have had traumatic experiences.

Quilts of Valour started in America but has quickly spread to Australia and so far more than 3,000 quilts have been presented to our diggers or their children. Barbara and Ken kindly gave us a demonstration of how they present these quilts with two of our members and it was very moving with a few damp eyes in the room.  Also at that meeting Lyn again read out a touching letter from one of our sponsored students.

Eight of our members attended our Zone Christmas and Friendship celebration at The Village Yeronga on the 26th November with lots of fun and plenty of laughter.  A guest speaker from the Smith Family spoke and gave us some valuable information regarding VIEW and the students we all sponsor.

Our Zone Councillor had organised a special guest speaker for the day, but she was unable to attend. Lerlene arranged for one of the Village residents to take over as the speaker at the last moment. This was incredibly kind of Aosthie to step in, and what an amazing lady, so very  interesting and easy to listen to. Thank you Aosthie for filling this role at the last minute.

Next month of course, is our Christmas Celebration.  This promises to be a lot of fun so come along and bring some friends so that they can have the opportunity to learn more about us, and VIEW.

See you all then for the last meeting of 2021.

Outings with Friends

Adventurous October 2021

A very different experience for our monthly meeting for October.  Members arrived as usual at the Redlands Sporting Club to find locked doors and people milling around outside.  As we waited a staff member informed us that unfortunately their electrical transformer had blown up  and they had to wait for Energex to replace it {and of course it took the whole day} so that was that and no meeting for us. Quite a lot of members {never daunted} all then went to a nearby café for lunch. Always adventures to be had in VIEW .

Our bus trip to Vend Markets was a huge success. Everyone had a lovely day and delicious lunch.  Our driver was very entertaining doubling as a magician  as well as driver.  October also saw us at the local R.S.L. for a Saturday  afternoon high tea and as always a great time of friendship with members and guests.

November meeting on the 11th and we will give time and thought to all our diggers in remembrance of the sacrifices made for us all.

Our guest speaker for November will be from an association  known as Quilts of Valour.   This wonderful group make and donate quilts to  our service men and women so more about that after the meeting.

We look forward to our November lunch meeting and hope to welcome guests and friends who missed out in October.

2021 September

After our August birthday celebrations we were very much back in swing for our first Spring luncheon meeting, which was a great meeting with many members and friends. One of our long standing and treasured members celebrated her 90th birthday on the day and another new member was presented with her badge.

Lyn, who corresponds with out LfL students read out a delightful letter from one of our year two students.

Guest speaker was Ros Kinder who is on the executive committee for Maybanke which is a local refuge for women and children who are victims of domestic violence.  Maybanke has recently expanded the premises and has also included a very nice playground for the children.

We also learnt that Ros is very much involved with Zonta, an organization that works across several nations for the protection of women and children suffering from Domestic Violence, and the education about preventing future violence.  This includes Madagascar and P.N.G. and this education is vital to protect future generations.    You may also see evidence right across Australia from Zonta in the form of Orange Ladies signs in public rest rooms etc. giving information on how to seek help in DV situations.  This is just one example of how they assist. Ros also volunteers with Rosies Street Vans who assist our homeless and those in need across Brisbane. It was very interesting to learn from Ros that Rosies are now starting to team up with Orange Sky. How wonderful it is that all these organisations are so willing to give of themselves to assist our most vulnerable in times of need.

The rest of September sees members come together for a bus trip to Vens Markets in Brisbane for some shopping, friendship and lunch and is proving to be very popular indeed. For more information contact Suzanne .

We are also looking forward to our coffee mornings at Arrabica café at Cleveland.

Our guest speaker for October is Bruce Collins with  his topic being Heart Fit Mature Age Fitness.

Looking forward to seeing you all at this meeting and please  if you have a friends who are interested in this topic then bring them along with you.

August 2021

A very special 24th Birthday luncheon meeting was enjoyed in August by members, and many visitors, including guests from other Clubs, National Counsellor Betty, Zone Counsellor QA02 Lerlene and Zone Counsellor QA01 Robyn.  Also welcomed was  past National Counsellor Lyn.

As always with our birthday celebrations we had our annual fund raising event and this included a trading table and plant table; always a very popular and enjoyable time.   A lot of work and effort went into the day and it was a great success.

Outings coming up for members and friends include a coffee morning on 25th August in Cleveland and on the 15th September, a coffee morning.  There is also a bus trip planned for Wednesday 29th September which as always will be a lot of fun.  Please ask Secretary Suzanne for  details.

Guest speaker for September will be Ros Kinder from Maybanke Women and Children Refuge and Crisis Centre.   We look forward to hearing Ros speak on the day.  For more information contact President Jean or Secretary Suzanne.
